This is John Batchelor, a conversation with colleague Gregory Copley about the fate of Al-Shaara,

0:06.1

the man who's named himself president of Syria. I'm told by Bill Rajo of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy,

0:13.9

more accurate would be mayor of parts of Damascus. Nonetheless, Al-Sahara has ambitions to be the president, naming himself, and so far,

0:24.2

Turkey, sponsoring Al-Shaara in the dash from Idlib province to Damascus, is supporting him. But what about

0:31.0

the future? Gregory, comments on what we can expect, what might happen, what Alshara wants, and the stability of Syria

0:40.1

when it returns. Here's Gregory Copley on Alshara, the president of Syria.

0:46.5

It could do, but interim president Al-Sharah has sworn that he will crack down on his own forces when he finds out who is responsible

for these massacres in the Latakia region.

1:00.0

And it's possible that if the Latakia region holds out that the Turks will not be able to

1:06.0

get the basing there that they are looking for, and it's possible that it could declare itself as an

1:12.2

independent zone and invite the Russians back in. By the way, the Israelis would not be necessarily

1:18.1

averse to that, because that would help control Turkey as well. So these things are all

1:25.2

up in the air, and there are a lot of possibilities out there.

1:29.7

But I don't believe it's going to go on for the whole century.

1:32.0

I think we will see a form of stability.

1:35.2

And Al-Sharia, Al-Sharra, rather, has indicated, I think, that he's willing to talk moderation,

1:43.5

not only to the U.S., but also to Israel and Saudi Arabia and the like in the region.

1:48.5

And that means that he would have to break away somewhat from Ankara if he can afford to do it,

1:54.3

given the number of MIT intelligence personnel and Turkish armed forces personnel now controlling so much of the Syrian government.
