This is John Batchel, a conversation with my colleague Brandon Weikert, National Interest,

about a new article from very famous people in the tech world.

Eric Schmidt leads them.

The Great Fear is a super intelligent, artificial intelligent machine,

created by a Manhattan-like project built by the U.S.

These machines will be a threat in the hands of bad actors. These machines will spark a eye race for a super intelligent, much more intelligent than one human being or a collective human

beings. And these supercomputers can do without us, or build a weapon, or build a virus.

In other words, science fiction. Brandon, Weikert and I debate the matter.

They invent something based upon the mutually assured destruction doctrine of the Cold War.

That is, you use your nooks, we'll use our nooks, and we'll all go down together.

It's called maim, mutually assured AI malfunction.

In other words, a way to wreck the machine that's taking over.

Quite sci-fi.

Really, 50s, 60s sci-fi, when they first started dealing with a computer as a character in a short story.

Brennan Weikert, much more of this later.

And you'll remember Eric Schmidt before Henry Kissinger died, wrote a entire book about how we're

going to have to adapt at the national security level to the rise of AI.

And now here comes this new report from him, outlining some of the concerns about this new technology.

Basically, the idea behind this new technology or this new report is that he's concerned.

He's concerned about the proposals coming from some quarters about a Manhattan project

like undertaking by the U.S.

federal government.
