This is John Batchel, a conversation with my colleague, Jeff Bliss, Pacific Watch, about the next anxiety in Southern California following the fires.

The atmospheric rivers are headed into Los Angeles and North.

That means heavy, heavy rain.

And what follows that, given that the woods are burnt out and there are no roots holding

together the forest are the mudslides of the California coast.

So we didn't have any mudslides really when we had the rain this past week.

Now, there have been a number of programs instituted, initiated to divert runoff.

We are seeing a lot of horrible, horrible stuff in the ocean.

When I've seen clips from various places, the Malibu, Palisades, Santa Monica, the ocean there,

the shoreline is, it's just black with all this charred, you know, timber and leaves and everything

in the water. It's disgusting. But they are worried that coming up over the next week,

we aren't possibly looking at atmospheric rivers in the next week or two. And if that happens,

if we get these big rainstorms that come in, that'll change the equation, you know, in a very

big way because that will bring rain. The soil can't hold the water and you'll have big slides.
