This is John Batchel. Hotel Mars with my colleague David Livingston. We spoke to two MIT astronomers,

0:07.8

Avi Schbor and Mark Hahn, about a discovery and what it was like to make that discovery. What Mark saw

0:16.3

and what Avi helped him understand. That moment itself.

0:21.9

They discovered what?

0:23.7

A disintegrating planet, 140 light years away,

0:29.3

disintegrating because it's an 11-hour rotation around the sun.

0:35.2

And the heat is melting the planet and turning the ground into liquid and then

0:44.2

vaporizing it. And then it's, because it's a little planet, it can't hold that the atmosphere

that's created out of the melted, vaporized rock which escapes into space.

0:56.5

The planet's disintegrating.

0:58.5

About a Mount Everest every day,

1:03.0

it'll take a couple of million years to completely evaporate.

1:06.7

But what I was interested in is what Mark saw the moment he discovered this anomaly,

1:13.6

this odd-looking, what he says, signal, that's astronomer talk for data.

1:19.1

Signal.

1:20.2

Here's Mark to explain.

1:22.3

Science is always uncertain, always hesitates, always doubts.

1:26.5

Come back, come back, come back, come back, look, look.

1:29.7

This is a real astronomer, talking to a real astronomer

1:33.7

about what it's like to be at the frontier of information about the cosmos.

1:39.1

Very exciting.
