Well, our movie on this episode is a return to the cinema of Ingmar Bergman, 1977's The Serpent's Egg,

a movie widely considered one of the Swedish show tour's very worst films. It's also one of only

two movies he made in the English language. Now, I had seen this movie once before, which I guess

would have been early 2016, and I remembered virtually nothing about it, except just the general sense of how atypical it was in his canon.

It only has one of his usual repertory company of actors, Leib Olman.

It takes place in Berlin in 1923, and it's a very lavish production,

quite atypical from the much more intimate dramas that he made close to his home in Sweden. It's also

like The Touch, his other English-language film, unusual for featuring an American star, in this case, David Carradine. The Touch

is also considered one of his worst movies. I mean, knowing how much of a Bergman fan you are,

I'm curious what you made of this movie. Did you enjoy it? Right. So, I mean, this is, this really is

the big question. What is it like when, you know, you sit down and watch a great directors widely regarded as his

worst movie anyway although ebert says that a film called all these women is actually bergman's

worst film i don't know anything about that movie so i can't speak to that i will just say that um

ibert gave this film 1.5 stars and he gave welcome to mooseport three stars. Okay. And look, you know, this movie

definitely defied my expectations somewhat. It's not a great movie. A lot about it does not work.

But it's better than fucking welcome to Mooseport. I mean, come on. Well, clearly you didn't see

Roger Ebert's famous debate with Gene Siskel about full metal

jacket where Siskel chided him on giving thumbs up to Benji the hunted, but thumbs down

to full metal jacket.

And Ebert passionately explained that these star ratings, these thumbs are relative, not absolute. Nevertheless, I do agree that this movie is better than

welcome to Mooseport. I feel like you and I have been disagreeing on the show a lot more lately,

but hopefully we can at least agree on that. I mean, I think we might agree on this one, though.
