This is CBS. I on the World. I'm John Batchel. I welcome Josh Rogan of the Washington Post, he writes global opinions, to introduce us to two names of organizations or opportunities that describes spying in the 21st century.

One is called salt typhoon and the other one is called Volt Typhoon.

The presenting issue in Josh's most recent column is the one used by the Ministry of State Security

to get access to, as far as I can tell, everything.

These operations, one by the Ministry of State Security, one by the PLA,

is it accurate to say that this is overwhelming news to Congress?

They didn't know this was going on.

Well, good evening, John.

Well, yes, it's very true to say that almost

all members of Congress are blissfully unaware of the scope and the scale of these breaches

into our telecommunication system that, according to my reporting, happened over a year ago.

And for most of that time, the FBI and our intelligence community was also unaware,

but they have apparently discovered it back in August.

So it's been at least two and a half months since the FBI figured out that Chinese hackers

had not only penetrated the internal systems of at least three major

U.S. telecom companies, but had also secured access to what's called the lawful access

portal, the lawful access system, which is used by the FBI to wiretap spies, criminals,

and people who've talked to spies and criminals. And what that means

is that the Chinese government has the ability in real time to monitor calls and texts from

anyone that they want who has a cell phone in the United States of America pretty much. And we know
