You may have heard some of my discussion with Professor Timothy Carey

in the most recent episode of All In The Mind.

He was talking about the importance of having a sense of being in control for our psychological health.

He's had a long career in mental health research

and has practised as a clinical psychologist in Australia for many years.

Now, though, he's the inaugural director of the Institute of Global Health Equity Research

and the Andrew Weiss Chair in Global Health

Research at the University in Rwanda.

I was interested in how he's applying his work on control to address health inequality

in Rwanda.

It's a really fascinating area and in fact I'm working on a book at the moment with some colleagues called Deconstructing Inequality and the book is all about applying this controlled perspective to things like inequality and an unfairness and so on.

And this is applied at a much broader level,

at a society and a community level.

And one of the things that got us interested in this

was a whole area around community living and social living,

and in particular, the social determinants of health,

which were really relevant to the work I was doing when I was in Central Australia

with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island, the communities and other people.

The social determinants of health are a really important aspect of public health.

Michael Marmot is one of the leading figures in this area.
