president of the United States and perhaps the most extraordinary election in modern American history.

Freddie Gray, our deputy editor, has been covering it from Washington, and he joins me now with Christopher Caldwell, who's also in D.C.

So, Freddie, what went wrong for Hillary?

Is it apart from everything?

Apart from everything, I think she just couldn't cope with the surge of white working-class popular anger.

It was a vote against her, but it was a vote against the system.

And I think to her credit, she's actually, she'll probably improve her popularity today because

she just gave a very fine concession speech. It was a rather beautiful democratic moment.

And actually, I think just all round, I'd like to say that, you know, Americans are a lot better

of showing themselves a lot better at being defeated by Trump than perhaps the remain side where after Brexit.

All the Washingtonians I spoke to have, they're obviously very upset, but they've got a real

sort of dignity about the process.

So we've been not sending off their Canadian passport applications just yet, then,

huh?

Well, there may be a bit of that going on, but I haven't seen it here. Now, Chris Caldwell, sure, Trump had white working class support, but there are simply not

enough white working class people in America to return somebody to the White House. I mean,

we saw some other demographics coming through for him. I was struck to find almost half of people

earning $250,000 a year, for example, backed Trump.

Two in five women backed Trump.

A third of Hispanics backed him.

It seems that he's got a lot more support than the group which has been quite easily identified as his core.
