Last week, Tennessee State lawmakers expelled two black state representatives from their

white-dominated legislature in a series of votes that were highly condemned by critics

all over the country.

One of the lawmakers, the since reinstated representative Justin Jones, told me on Sunday that there

is no democracy in Tennessee.

Tennessee is the most undamocratic state in the union, but that was just one instance

of what some of coined the third reconstruction.

Take another example.

In late March, the majority white and Republican legislature pushed through a series of reforms

that would create a state police force and a second court system in Jackson, the state

capital of Mississippi.

This was met with a alarm by black Mississippians who charged that it would impose a separate

justice system for white and black residents.

Since mayor even likened it to apartheid, Mississippi has the highest percentage of black

residents in the nation.

Jackson itself is overwhelmingly black and democratic.

Still the proposed reforms, now sit on the governor's decks, have garnered the support

of just one of the state's 54 black lawmakers in the legislature.

And we could also talk about the House Republicans and what they did to a majority black city

in Washington, DC, essentially a third version of something similar of basically overruling

home rule.
