So to begin, I want to start with

an excerpt from the first letter of

St. John, which is on your handout.

Most of the quotes are going to be

on the handout that you have this morning.

St. John writes the following.

Do not love the world or the things of the world.

If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

For all that is in the world, lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life,

is not from the Father, but is from the world.

Yes, the world and its enticement are passing away, but whoever does the will of God

remains forever. These powerful words of the beloved disciple remind us why we do what we do in Latin.

Our pursuit of repentance and penance is not acute cultural practice that helps us to know

we're Catholics and everybody else to know that we're Catholic.
