Let's begin this retreat with the opening verses of what many modern scholars believe to be the first composed gospel.

We'll hear within these words from the evangelist Mark the urgency of our retreat's theme, through repentance, true penance.

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the son of God.

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, behold, I send my angel before thy face,

who shall prepare the way before thee. A voice, one crying in the desert,

prepare ye the way of the Lord,

make straight his paths.
