I'll be continuing the reflections on the temptations of Christ that I began this morning.

Remember that this morning I discussed how we can see in Jesus an example of how to undergo the trial of our own fasting.

After all, there is a link here between fasting and temptation.

For fasting weakens us by taking away our earthly assistance and therefore makes us a target of the evil one.

But it also gives us an opportunity to grow in reliance on the only strength that matters,

the strength that comes to God itself.

That is the strength that Jesus relied on, and it is the strength that we too must rely on.

I then discussed how the first temptation is based on a legitimate need and uses as a lever,

uses this as a lever to tempt the Lord.

But the Lord responds with Holy Scripture, noting that we cannot live on bread alone, but

by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.
