So how's everybody enjoying filing their tax returns?

Are we all enjoying paying to live in the country, led by a purported billionaire who refuses to show his tax returns and prove he's actually worth as much as he says?

I actually don't even care if he's worth as much as he says.

We have no idea whether someone like him, who's benefited from the system to such an extreme degree, has ever paid a dime back into the system so that others might benefit from it.

How's everybody feeling about that? It's pretty good, right?

This, of course, is just the most extreme example of how frustrating tax season can be.

Beyond the complexity of all the forms and regulations that accompany taxes, I think one of the hardest things about them as a concept is that it's easy to feel disconnected from the purpose they serve.

It's not just that the whole system is so hopelessly complex that most of us just feel fortunate to get through April without owing more money.

It's that even if we understand logically that a portion of our money is being reinvested in the well-being of the state and country we live in, we don't have much of an emotional connection to the value of that.

The philosophies behind those investments are mostly hidden beneath all the complexity, which is probably a little bit on purpose.
