Summary

Jess is joined by television writer, producer and director Page Hurwitz, exec. producer of Emmy-nominated Netflix comedy specials starring Tiffany Haddish, Fortune Feimster and Michelle Buteau. Hurwitz discusses discovering and casting those women (plus Amy Schumer) on Last Comic Standing. Hurwitz also chats about her experience as the EP and showrunner for Rosie O'Donnell's Oprah OWN talk show and shares her thoughts on why the show ultimately did not live up to expectations. Finally, we go deep on reality television production (she EP'd Tabatha Takes Over) and the role it played in the 2016 election.

PS: Don't miss the last 10 minutes where Page reveals she is working on a documentary about an insane trip Jess was part of with Kate McKinnon, Julie Goldman & Brandy Howard.

Welcome back to Hot Takes and Deep Dives. This is Jess and my guest today is one of the

0:20.0

most powerful and influential people working in television and comedy today. Page Hurwitz

0:26.3

is fresh off executive producing and being Emmy nominated for the latest Netflix

0:31.2

specials for Tiffany Haddish, Wanda Sykes and Fortune Feemstar. She cast an executive

0:36.7

produced last comic standing for nearly a decade and was also the executive producer for Tabitha

0:42.2

Takes Over and Showrunner for Rosie O'Donnell's talk show The Oprah Own Show. Trust me we're

0:48.7

going to get into all of this and more. Please welcome Page Hurwitz. Hi Jess how are you?

0:54.4

I'm great how are you? I'm good thank you. It's nice to see you. So there's a lot that I want to

1:02.6

cover with you. I guess to start to sort of explain your role in these very inconvenience careers.

So some of these people you sort of discovered through last comic standing is that would that be fair

1:18.0

to say? That would be fair to say Jess. Yes it's been a great journey so far my career and

1:29.6

what's been really nice is that I've been able to shepherd and champion a lot of

1:37.2

comedians that I love and been able to I've been able to work with them in different

1:43.2

projects and and see them grow and hopefully help them grow and that's been incredibly rewarding

1:52.0

for me. So you were you you were an executive producer of last comic standing for many years.

1:59.5

Yeah I was and I but I did it a little differently because you know a lot of producers and showrunners

2:08.3

run shows but they don't get that hands on in terms of their casting and I always like to do

2:16.3

my own casting. So when I when I was working on last comic standing I was kind of that's well I

2:23.1

was a little bit surprised by how that casting process worked because it was there it was a little

2:27.6

disorganized and also I felt like there was not in that much diversity among the comedians who

2:34.5

are on that show and keep in mind at the time it was the only opportunity for a stand of comedians

2:40.1

in Primetime Network Television and it was before the proliferation of all the streamers and so
