She's a stand-up comic, a writer and the star of the sitcom she co-created based on

her life called Bob Hart's Abyssalah. She was transplanted to England after growing

up in Nigeria. She worked for years as an elevator engineer before pursuing comedy.

You may know her from the Daily Show with Trevor Noah, her three Netflix comedy specials

or is the first Brit to perform on Deaf Comedy Jam. Her memoir, Cach Handed, is out now,

we'll be talking about it all. Please welcome Gina Yashire. Hey Gina, well hello, how are

you? I'm good, thank you, very good. So I read your book, Your Story is completely fascinating

and you are one of those comedians where you watch, you perform like you genuinely want

to kind of like be friends with you and like chat more and like get to know your personalities

like super infectious. So thank you. Let's first start with the television show that you

star on and then I really want to like get into your life and like your stories and stuff.

Okay, explain this to me. You were found discovered initially as a consultant because Chuck

Laurie, for anybody who doesn't know who Chuck Laurie is, he is the creator of huge sitcoms

from the 90s like Race Under Fire, Sybil, Dharma and Greg. He then went on to create two and a half

men, the big bang theory, presently young Sheldon, the Kaminsky method. He also was a writer on

Roseanne, Charles and Charge back in the day. So he was creating a show, a show that started

a Nigerian woman and was creating their love story. And what's the deal? He sat around with his

two other writers and was like, we can't, we're three middle aged white guys, we can't write

this thing. We need to find a female black creator, comedian, like how did, how did this work?

Well, basically, Chuck went on a trip and he went all through Africa and he met those beautiful

African people. And he was like, I want to include them in my next show. And he was making
