Are you ready for our trip? Are you packed up, ready to journey through the traveler's

Psalms with us? We begin with the first, Psalm 120.

I want to just read it with you.

It's only seven verses long,

and then I want to bring you to a truth that will help you on our trip.

Psalm 120 in verse 1 says,

in my distress, I cried unto the Lord,

and he heard me, deliver my soul, I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me.

Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue.

What shall be given unto thee, or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?

I have to tell you, of all the Psalms in this amazing book, this is one that is probably little known. It's nothing like Psalm 1 or

Psalm 23 or Psalm 119 for sure, and yet it is the first in what is referred to as the songs of degrees.

You remember that the degrees here means to ascend, to go up. We believe that the nation of

Israel sang these songs as they went up to the temple to worship. Some people believe they

sang them at certain fixed points along the journey,

literally traveling from a far country or the extreme parts of Israel to Jerusalem

and singing as they went up to the city.

Others believe that they were sung on the steps of the temple

and that they correspond with the steps going up to the temple.
