This is Friends of History Debating Society. I'm John Batchel, welcoming Jeremy Zakis of New South Wales.

He is in winter. And winter in Australia is very different than winter in New England, so I'm learning.

When Jeremy and I last spoke, the meteorologist, the weather service, was promising warmer temperatures in some point in the winter,

knowing that the cold air comes from Antarctica from the south over New Zealand, over Tasmania, to Jeremy and New South Wales.

And the tropical weather comes from the north from Queensland

and behind that is the tropics themselves,

the archipelagos of Indonesia and Malaysia.

And from the west, the Indian Ocean breeze

pours over the continent and heads to Jeremy.

So these are turbulent forces that have a lot of energy in them.

However, Jeremy is reporting there's only been one direction in its Antarctica.

You are in what passes in Australia as a deep freezing winter. Is that

correct? Good evening to you. Giday, John. Yes, that is absolutely correct. In fact, it's been

a deep freezing winter now, probably for about three weeks. And you're absolutely right. Three

weeks ago, or even four weeks ago, the Bureau of Meteorology said, don't worry about it,

this very, very cold weather. And I'm talking near freezing temperatures here on the East Coast,

it will pass. It will disappear and we will get a very, very warm winter. However, we're now

three weeks down the track and I can tell you, John, we are not only not getting a warm winter.

The forecast for this week is again freezing temperatures. So we're talking some maximums,

maybe around about 40, 45 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and overnight dropping as

lowest 28 degrees Fahrenheit, which here in Sydney is incredibly, incredibly cold. So I don't
