Summary

In modern masculine culture, there can be a lot of pressure to shut down, suppress, or numb out emotions. But just like everything else we can experience, there's tremendous amounts of information in what we're feeling. This is why I'm such a big advocate for somatic practices—really feeling in your body what's going on—and cultivating emotional intelligence. And it's why I sat with EVRYMAN co-founder Owen Marcus; he's an expert on this subject. For more than twenty-five years, Owen Marcus has worked with men’s groups to develop programs that give them the tools and teach them the skills to be successful men, celebrate their strengths, and live their lives fully and with joy. As co-founder of EVRYMAN, he and his support men worldwide. As the New York Times describes it: “CrossFit for emotions.” Owen Marcus overcame challenges such as Asperger’s Syndrome and Dyslexia to pursue his passion of helping others find their out-of-the-box solutions. However, it wasn’t until much later that he understood that in being free to be his own man, he was able to create and fulfill a life he designed. Along the way, he met many incredible men – men who struggled to create the lives they wanted. Owen observed the patterns in his corporate management and Mindfulness Stress Reduction seminars and then began working with groups of men to give them something new: how to be their own man. All right, team, welcome to The Man Talk Show.

0:13.5

I'm Connor Beaton.

0:14.9

And joining me today is Mr. Owen Marcus, who specializes in men's or masculine emotional intelligence. So we're going to be

0:23.0

talking extensively this episode about what is emotional intelligence, why it's so important

0:29.4

for your life, for your relationship, for your career, purpose, happiness, et cetera,

0:34.0

how to develop and deepen that emotional intelligence. But first, let me tell you a little bit

0:38.5

about Mr. Owen Marcus. So after 20 years of working on healing and working with his Asperger's

0:44.9

syndrome and dyslexia, he discovered something that was still missing. His mind was fully working,

0:50.1

but his life wasn't. He wasn't happy. His relationships with women were sometimes struggling.

0:56.0

And so he'd done a little work to understand what was going on behind the scenes,

1:00.0

which led him down the path of doing a tremendous amount of men's work.

1:05.3

And it led him down the path of training in somatic psychotherapy,

1:09.4

of which he is now a member of the United States

1:11.6

Association for Body Psychotherapy. And for years after this, for the last few decades,

1:17.9

he's trained coaches, therapists, and psychiatrists in the work that he does, specifically

1:23.7

in the work that he does with every man. So Owen Marcus is a co-founder of

1:29.2

every man and he has supported men's work, men's groups, men's organizations for the last

1:35.2

few decades in really allowing men to develop a more, a deeper sense of how to actually navigate their emotional landscape. And if you listen to

1:48.8

this show, if you've tuned into my work before, you will know how important that is to me

1:52.8

and how relevant this conversation is because I think that somatic work specifically understanding

2:00.0

where we feel in the body is important because for a lot of men that come and start to do this work, you know, you ask a man, what are you feeling right now? And for the most part, a lot of guys just don't know. You know, it's like, I don't know. I don't know if I'm feeling ashamed. I don't know if I'm feeling embarrassed. Most of us can tell when we're feeling angry,

2:18.1

but that's kind of about it for some guys. And so having a more robust language, understanding of
