This is Marianne Sullivan. And this week, Marianne will be speaking to Bill Wazick and Monica Murphy about their extraordinary recent book, Our Kindred Creatures, How Americans Came to Feel

the Way They Do About Animals. It's not often we get to delve into the history of our

relationship with animals. And this book is really an eye-opener. And I'm seeing it everywhere.

Yeah. No, this is a big-time book. Well, of course, Bill is the editorial director of the New York Times Magazine.

So, like, he knows how to write.

Yeah, I guess that's successful.

Monica is a veterinarian.

But it's mostly about the 19th century, and it really does lay out how our attitudes towards animals really developed tremendously

during that decade. And of course, as we all know, some animals got included in and some

animals got included out and we have those problems to today. But, you know, it's important

to study your history to know where these crazy ideas and wonderful ideas and relationships came from.

And that's what they did.

It's a deep dive.

I mean, they tell some really, really complex stories.

Well, I can't wait to hear that.

It's interesting.

By the way, you should really pat yourself on the back that you peeled me away from what I was doing to record tots right now, because I was wrapped. I was busy doing something that is- You were wrapped, like somebody come in and wrap you up like a mummy so you couldn't get to the microphone to record? Well, I was nearly yarn-bombed, so the answer to that is not no. I've taken up crocheting.

Yeah, I know. I know. That's all you talk about. Like, you've come late to it, but you're excited.
