Welcome to Black Girl Burnout podcast, Kelly here. And today I want to talk about how to opt out of the need to change people's minds.

0:18.0

This has been a journey for me because for a long time, I was really caught up in the need

0:23.2

to make people feel away about me, to make different choices, and to make different decisions.

0:28.9

And what I have come to in this space and season of my life is that I no longer feel that need.

0:35.2

I have fully opted into, I respect your choice.

0:39.2

I have opted out of changing people's minds and I've opted into, I respect people's choices.

0:45.7

Let me give you some examples of where I have changed my behavior and how it's bettered my life and then offer you a pathway and a practice to doing

0:55.6

the same for yourself. Really, I think about this opting out of changing people's minds in three

1:02.0

areas of where we might get stuck in a loop of doing this. One is with our romantic and platonic

1:08.2

partnerships, like the way we create friendships and have partners in our lives,

1:14.0

1:17.7

when they're no longer interested in us or they're no longer giving us what we need in the

1:22.7

relationship.

1:23.8

The second place this shows up is around like colleagues and peers, I guess, for lack of a better word.

1:32.2

Once I became a quote unquote boss or supervisor, I would sometimes get in my feelings about people not wanting to work with me anymore or peer relationships and connections that just weren't

1:45.5

fruitful or working out, I'd want to change their mind. So in the professional realm. And the third

1:51.7

area we're going to talk about is when we want to change people's minds around decisions or

1:57.7

choices that they make that we just don't agree with, that we fundamentally think is not

2:02.1

healthy for them. So looking at the first area, let's talk a little bit about how I no longer

2:08.6

want to change people's minds when it comes to partnering with me romantically or being my

2:13.7

friend. I have just let go of that. I am in the space now where I'm like, I respect your

2:19.9

choice. And I don't say that with anger or sarcasm underneath it. I say, I'm respecting your choice
