Summary

Real quick: Now's the best time to support this show! Thanks to a few super-star Arm and a Leg listener/donors, your donation is matched two for one right now. Here's the link to donate.

Ok, now: We’ve got a mini-episode for you today, a four-minute coda to the epic story we brought you in December.

It features a last tip for anyone who might want to ask a hospital about charity care — which, as we learned from these recent stories, is most of us.

And it comes with my big thanks for being part of this show’s community this year. You’re our reason for being, and our best sources.

You’re also our biggest source of financial support, so I will ask one more time to pitch in now if you can

Thank you so much! We'll catch you in 2024.

Hey there. Those last couple episodes were a lot and in a good way. This was by a lot the most

0:07.1

intensive reporting we've ever done for this show and there was still so much and so many

0:12.4

interviews you didn't even hear.

0:29.7

of practical advice I've ever come across

0:31.8

in my reporting for this show. That would be

0:34.0

Jared Walker, founder of the nonprofit Dollar Four.

0:37.0

Jared has spent years spreading the word about charity care and making it easier for people to get the financial

0:44.3

breaks they deserve. But as our reporting makes clear, there are still so many

0:50.6

people who qualify for charity care and don't get it. So here's

0:55.2

Jared's quick bit of advice. If you or anybody you know is asking someone from a

1:00.2

hospital about it, ask for charity care by name. Now the terms

1:05.2

financial assistance and charity care are often used interchangeably even by

1:08.8

the IRS, but Jared says asking for financial assistance may not get you the same results.

1:14.6

Because if you say I need financial assistance, that could be a payment plan.

1:19.6

That could be a care credit card.

1:21.4

At least that's how whoever you're talking to at a hospital might choose to understand it.

1:26.2

I mean yeah we've got great financial assistance options. Let me sign up for this credit card. And some hospitals do that kind of verbal slide of hand as Jared and
