All right we are looking at Romans chapter 12 today and we have some exciting things to look at today.

Some kind of old-fashioned words the apostle Paul uses that we need to get our brains around.

Here's what he says.

He says, do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.

Now there's three words in there that we don't use very often in our culture,

slothful, zeal, and fervent.

So let's just slowly walk through this to make sure we understand what the apostle is saying to us.

He says do not be slothful in zeal.

Now the word slothful means lazy or apathetic about something.

So he's saying, don't be lazy in your zeal.

Now what is zeal?

Well, a good synonym for zeal is enthusiasm. So he's talking about enthusiasm for

the Lord, enthusiasm as a believer in Jesus Christ. So let's piece that together

then. Do not be lazy in your enthusiasm for your faith and

for the Lord. I think that's a very appropriate instruction and admonition because it's easy to kind of go on

autopilot in life isn't it? It's easy to let things like Christian disciplines of Bible study and prayer fall by the wayside in a busy life.

You see it's not that those things are what quote unquote make our relationship with the Lord,

but they definitely are tools that help to fuel
