From CNN, I'm a Falma DK, with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, January 28th. Our rule around illegal immigration accounting is simply that.

It is to account for how many students of illegal immigrants are in our schools.

The Oklahoma Board of Education has approved a proposal requiring families

to prove their immigration or citizenship status when

enrolling their children in school.

The rule still needs to be approved by the legislature and governor to take effect.

Ryan Walters, the superintendent of public instruction, started the meeting by criticizing

the media's, quote, lies and quote, gaslighting the issue.

We want to make sure that all that information is gathered so that we can make decisions

on where resources go, where personnel goes, and we can continue to make sure that Oklahoma

is leading the country in education reform. But to do that, you have to have information.

You have to have the data around where your kids are coming from.

The proposed rule calls on districts to submit, quote, only information of the total number of students that lack documentation without any personal identifiable information to the State Department of Education.

Education and immigration advocates say they believe the proposal

will make immigrant families feel afraid and unwelcome at public schools

that are legally required to provide every child education regardless of citizenship status.
