This is CBS I On The World. I'm John Batcher. Albany, capital of the very blue state of

New York. New York, city, the largest city in the galaxy, but also dominated by the Democratic

Party. However, I learned from Harry Segel, who writes a column for the New York Daily

News. He's also a senior editor at the city and online journal that being on the same

team doesn't mean you're going in the same direction. Most recently, there's news that

a steam judge, Hector LaSalle, has been rejected by the Albany legislature, his appointment

by the Democratic recently overwhelmingly elected governor, Kathy Hocal. Ordinarily,

you would assume that this was all in order, Kathy Hocal, fulfilling her responsibilities

to fill the chief judge of the Court of Appeals, the highest judge in the land in New York,

and Harry tells me supervising all of the courts. But rejection. Harry, we spoke of this

some weeks past, and it had to do with, I guess, document search of decisions made in the

presence of the judge, not necessarily with his signature. But in any event, the rejection

has taken place. What does this tell us now about the relationship between the governor

and the legislature and for the people of New York? How should they regard this sudden

attempt? So Kathy Hocal, who just historically won

the term of her own as New York's first woman to be elected governor, her first big decision,

in a lot of ways, after signing off on a raise for the legislature, by the way, it makes

them the highest paid lawmakers, state lawmakers in the country, was nominating this guy,

Hector LaSalle, to be the chief judge of the Court of Appeals in New York to share.

LaSalle had been part of a panel of appeal court judges in New York who had several decisions

that the weft didn't like. And as soon as she said that he was the pick, voices of opposition

started to speak up. And Hocal said, he'll have a vote. And we'll decide from there.
