Summary

When diagnosed with a thyroid issue, it can take a while to narrow down the true root cause. Dr. Donna Mazzola was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune disorder. She wanted to get to the root of how to treat her diagnosis, as well as find out what lead to this autoimmune disorder in the first place. She quickly realized that while medicine does have a place in healing, it’s a balance between nutrition and medicine that can make a true impact on disease. With her Doctorate in Pharmacy and a Masters in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine, she started Dr. Autoimmune Girl LLC to share reputable scientific information in a simple format. The mission is to identify the root causes of disease through health and wellness and to create a balance between nutrition and medicine. Dr. Mazzola shares all about nutrients that play into the development as well as the pervasiveness of Hashimoto’s, including discussing the role magnesium, selenium, zinc and Vitamin D play as well.

and diet similarly to other autoimmune disorders. We talk today about all of the different

nutrients that play into the development as well as the pervasiveness of

1:15.3

Hashimoto's. We go far beyond just iodine and really dig deep into the mechanisms of how do

1:22.7

minerals like magnesium and selenium and zinc play into Hashimoto's.

1:30.8

We talk about foods. We talk about an amazing study all about Brazil nuts outperforming

1:37.8

selenium supplementation. It is a great conversation and it is so critical that we as me as your host and you as the listeners inspire people to understand that a diagnosis of a thyroid disorder is not the end of the world.

1:59.3

And there is something broken in our modern medical

2:05.2

system in the way that we treat thyroid disorders. What do we do? When someone comes in and they say,

2:12.2

oh, you have low thyroid. Well, people just supplement with a thyroid supplement.

2:28.2

Levo thyroxin, synthroid, even though they are medications, they are still simply supplementing with thyroid hormone.

2:37.1

The problem is that thyroid balance goes well beyond what you can just supplement. Because if you're supplementing,

2:44.4

but you can't convert into active T3, well, that's a major problem. Plus, if your thyroid is out of balance, 9.999 times out of 10, your adrenal glands are also out of balance. So there is an interplay

2:55.3

with all of our endocrine system that makes it so critically important than we do more than
