Live from NPR News in Washington. I'm Jack Spear. Kate Cox, a woman with pregnancy complications who asked Texas courts for access to an abortion,

has instead left the state for one.

As in P. P.S. Barcelona Simmons-Duffin explains,

the fast-moving case was pending

before the state Supreme Court.

Kate Cox is 31 years old and lives in the Dallas area

with her husband and two young kids.

About 20 weeks into her third pregnancy, she learned

her fetus has Trizamy 18, a genetic condition with slim to no chance of

survival. She also went to the ER multiple times with cramping and other symptoms.

Last week, the Center for Reproductive Rights filed an emergency petition.

They asked the district court to suspend all of the abortion ban's penalties

against her, her husband, and her

doctor so she could receive an abortion in Texas. The petition was granted, but

the attorney general immediately appealed to the Texas Supreme Court.

Cox's attorneys say she struggled for days in legal limbo

before deciding to leave the state for an abortion.
