Israeli war planes have been pounding Gaza for a third straight day today and Israel says

its ground forces are now operating across the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian health officials say more than 190 people have been killed since Friday, the end of a week-long

ceasefire that allowed for an exchange of hostages.

NPR's Amy-held reports that Hamas is believed to still be holding dozens of hostages.

After freeing more than 100 hostages during the pause, Hamas now is holding somewhere

around 140, according to the White House.

As for American hostages...

We think the number is about eight. We don't have perfect

visibility on where they all are. We certainly don't have perfect visibility on

their physical or mental condition. John Kirby spokesman with the National Security Council tells ABCs this week while the

U.S. is working to get Israel and Hamas back negotiating.

Neither side is willing to come back to the table.

Kirby says Israel has been receptive to U.S. messaging to minimize civilian casualties.

Since fighting resumed, Palestinian deaths continue to rise.
