Telecom services in the Gaza Strip went down today as fuel to power the network

ran out. That's according to the main telecommunications company serving the enclave.

NPR's Peter Canyon reports Israel has sharply restricted fuel deliveries to Gaza.

Telecom companies, Joal and Paltel, issued a statement saying they no longer had the means

to sustain the network.

Israel has allowed very limited amounts of fuel into the Gaza Strip and

has said it can only be used by trucks delivering humanitarian aid. Israel has been concerned that

if more fuel were brought into Gaza it would be stolen by Hamas and used in its fight

against Israeli forces.

Rights groups and aid agencies have called on Israel to deliver more fuel, as well as more

humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

Separately, Israeli forces dropped leaflets warning Palestinians in southern Gaza to leave the

area, raising concerns about a worsening humanitarian situation.
