Live from NPR News in Washington. I'm Jack Spear. More than 650 U.S. officials have signed a letter calling on President Biden to support

an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

As NPR's Asma Hollad reports, this letter is a sign of internal dissent over the President's Israel

policy.

The letter was signed anonymously by political appointees and civil servants across some 40 different

government agencies.

That's according to a person familiar with the drafting of the letter

who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of fear of repercussions.

The letter begins by condemning the October 7th Hamas attacks and goes on to urge Biden to de-escalate and call for a ceasefire.

Separately, a high profile list of more than 100 former Biden and Obama administration officials issued a public letter praising

the president for his quote staunch support of Israel.

This comes as the Democratic Party appears divided.

The latest NPR PBS News Hour Marist poll found 56% of

Democrats think the Israeli military's response has been too much.
