President Biden is calling on Israel to protect Gaza's main hospital as heavy fighting continues around the building.

NPR's Franco-Oordonez reports the comments come as Israeli forces have closed in on the hospital complex.

Israel's counterattacks on Gaza have pummeled the territory's largest hospital.

The Israeli military says Hamas's command center lies beneath it.

President Biden says the hospitals must

be protected. You know I have not been reluctant and expressing my concerns

that's going on and is my hope and expectation that there will be less intrusive action relative

to the hospital.

He added that negotiations continue to the hospital.
