The United Nations says more than half of hospitals in Gaza are no longer functioning.

There are shortages of fuel and supplies.

And Israel's military says its soldiers are engaged in gun battles with

militants very close to some of the facilities.

NPR's Lauren Frere heard from one doctor working in a hospital in northern Gaza.

Dr. Rasa and Abousita is a surgeon from London who's been in Gaza since the day after the war began.

The scale of the substance, the number of the patients is overwhelming.

On a group Zoom call he says there are shortages at Alachley Hospital where he is.

It was hit by an explosion last month.

We don't have an x-ray technician and we don't have access to a blood bank.

The blood bank has been deployed.

He describes the injuries he's seeing.

The burn, the blast, the gravel in the moon.

Abu sita says he's just had to amputate a six year old-old girl's leg and arm and the boy in the bed

next to her lost all of his family. He calls the person a loss for everyone
