The U.S. will resume deportations to Venezuela.

NPR's Joel Rose reports it's the Biden administration's latest attempt

to discourage Venezuelans from crossing the southern border illegally.

Immigration authorities say they will restart repatriation flights directly to Venezuela

immediately. The Biden administration has faced record levels of migration from Venezuela,

fueled by economic and political turmoil in the country.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants have made the dangerous journey through the Dariengap jungle

in Panama to reach the U.S.-Mexico border.

The administration has responded with a combination of new legal pathways

as well as tougher enforcement at the border.

An administration official says the resumption of deportations to Venezuela will show

quote, how we are committed to imposing consequences on those who cross the border unlawfully.

Officials did not say how many flights or how many migrants would be on board.
