After the House of Representatives voted to oust speaker Kevin McCarthy, Republicans are scrambling

to figure out who can get the votes to replace him. NPR's Digital Walsh reports members are also

not sure how long a speaker pro-tem can run the House.

An interim speaker, North Carolina Republican Patrick McKenry, has been tapped to

preside over the election of a new leader of the House. Louisiana Republican Garrett Graves says

the rules about the job are not entirely clear, but he believes McKenry could remain in

the post for weeks. The authority of the speaker pro-tem, the Patrick McKenry, is this is untested.

There is not a manual, there's not a book, this has never been done before.

For now though, the House is effectively paralyzed. No votes on legislation can happen,

committees can meet, but can't issue subpoenas or move bills to the floor for full house votes.

House judiciary chairman Jim Jordan is running for speaker,

so is House majority leader Steve Scolise. A forum for candidates is slated for next Tuesday.
