What was Hurricane Helene is now a tropical storm taking a deadly and destructive path

across the southeastern U.S.

It made landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast last night. At least three deaths

are blamed on the storm.

NPR's Debbie Elliott reports from Tallahassee it's causing flash flooding in Georgia

and the Carolinas today and has left millions without power.

Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida's big bend region Thursday night

with winds reaching 140 miles an hour, a category 4 hurricane. It sent record storm surges into coastal towns like

Steenhatchy and Cedar Key washing away homes. Governor Ron Desantis says emergency crews are

deploying now. The reality is a storm of this magnitude you know it leaves a lot of

damage in its wake. Helene ripped inland with destructive winds, tornadoes, and torrential rains, prompting

water rescues in the Atlanta area and parts of the Carolinas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is speaking to the UN General Assembly.

He delayed his speech from earlier this week as Israel widened its attacks on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

The U.S. and allies had proposed a three-week ceasefire there, but earlier Israeli officials

rejected the plan.
