Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Spear. A major air assault by Israel

in Lebanon has left nearly 500 people dead and wounded more than a thousand others.

The attacks being called the worst there since 2006.

When Israel last fought a war with the militant group Hezbollah,

NPR's move, Sherlock is in Tel Aviv

and says at the moment neither side's backing down.

Neither side is heeding these calls for calm.

You had on Sunday Hezbollah's deputy leader,

Naim Carson, saying this is an open-ended battle of reckoning with Israel now.

And you have Israel saying its objective is to return its civilians back to their homes in the

north, but to do that, they are striking targets all over Lebanon.

And if they want to push Hezbollah back from the border,

there could possibly be a ground incursion.

As we're hearing with new strikes on Beirut just about now, it's clear that Israel is also

not trying to calm the situation, it's clearly pursuing its military objectives.

Hezbollah had Israel with rockets following Israel's recent use of exploding pagers and communication

devices to kill Hezbollah leaders.
