A powerful earthquake has struck Morocco.

The epicenter is just over 40 miles from the historic city of Marrakesh.

The government says more than 2,000 people died and that death toll is expected to rise.

Hundreds of others are missing or injured.

NPR's Ruth Sherlock has more.

Video footage posted online from the earthquake region shows people panicked running through

the streets and the dark amid clouds of dust as they try to find some kind of safety.

The 6.8 magnitude quake hit overnight in the Atlas Mountains region, close to the city

of Marrakesh.

Rescue workers say much of the damage is in remote villages that are hard to reach.

Some roads have become impossible and power is down to many of the villages.

In Marrakesh, some of the city's historic sites, such as its famous red perimeter walls,

are said to have been damaged.

The city attracts tourists from all over the world.

After the quake, some tourists went to hospitals to donate blood.

President Biden outlined plans for a new rail and shipping corridor to connect India,

the Middle East and Europe.
