Live from NPR News in Washington, encore of a Coleman, Federal Special Counsel Jack Smith

says he is seeking a speedy trial on the new indictment against former President Donald

Trump.

A federal grand jury has indicted Trump on four counts related to the efforts to overturn

the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Smith says those efforts led to an attack on the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump supporters.

The attack on our nation's Capitol on January 6, 2021 was an unprecedented assault on the

seat of American democracy.

It's described in the indictment it was fueled by lies.

Lies by the defendant targeted at obstructing a bedrock function of the U.S. government,

the nation's process of collecting, counting, and certifying the results of the presidential

election.

And expected to appear in federal court tomorrow to face these charges.

Trump faces many more charges in an entirely separate federal case, the alleged mishandling

of classified documents at his Florida estate.

Federal Special Counsel Jack Smith is in charge of that case too.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to dozens of those allegations.

A special prosecutor in Michigan is charged a former Republican candidate for Attorney General

and a former Michigan State lawmaker with illegal actions.

In public radio's Rick Pluta reports, this is related to the 2020 election.

The charges against Matt DePerno and former State Representative, Dare Rendon, both Republicans

include conspiracy, undue possession of a voting machine, and willfully damaging a voting
