Record-breaking heat is continuing in many parts of the country this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings and advisories for parts of

several states.

And as NPR's Kirk-Sigler reports, forecasters are warning that a prolonged heat dome could

linger from Arizona to Idaho.

Extreme heat advisories are an effect this weekend in Arizona, California, and Idaho and

Utah, where temperatures could hit 105 or higher around Boise and Salt Lake City.

In some deserts, the overnight lows may barely dip below 100.

All of this follows a record-breaking June for heat worldwide, and earlier this month,

the record was broken for the hottest ever global average temperature.

Scientists warn these excessive heat waves are far more common now with human-caused climate

change, especially the so-called heat domes afflicting Texas and Arizona.

As one UCLA climate scientist put it this past week, the extent of these heat waves should

be rare, but we're seeing what should be one in 100 year, or even one in 1,000 year

events happening now more and more.

A manhunt is underway for a gunman thought to be responsible for a mass shooting in Hampton

Georgia yesterday.

Four people were shot to death in a suburban neighborhood south of Atlanta.

The suspect is identified as 40-year-old Andre Longmore.

He's described as armed and dangerous.
