Coleman, the NATO summit is getting underway in Lithuania with NATO leaders.

President Biden is in Vilnius for the conference.

He's very pleased with the news that all obstacles have been lifted to allow Sweden to join

the military alliance.

The first time that NATO leaders will meet with 31 together and looking forward to meeting

very soon with 32 members with the addition of Sweden.

Turkey had blocked Sweden's NATO bid, claiming Sweden encouraged Kurdish separatist.

Turkey has now dropped its opposition.

As the NATO summit gets underway in the Lithuanian capital, NPR's Eleanor Beardsley has met

Lithuanians who have volunteered to help out.

She has this report from Vilnius.

Rima Olberkite is giving directions to visitors in the streets of Vilnius.

She was 13 when the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991, but remembers life under Soviet

rule very well.

We were forbidden to do a lot of things, to go to the church, to eat what we want, to

buy clothes because there were nothing to buy in the Soviet Union.

Olberkite says today, Lithuania is a totally different, dynamic place like all the Baltic

nations that gained their independence.

But she says Russia has not changed, and that's why she's volunteering at the NATO summit.

We have constant threats from Russia and constant threats of not knowing what's going to

be tomorrow.
