NATO Secretary General says Turkey is dropping its objection to ratifying Sweden's bid

to join the military alliance.

MPR's Peter Canyon reports the announcement came on the eve of the NATO summit in Lithuania.

In a post to Twitter, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Turkey's president

Richard Taiyapar to one quote, has agreed to forward the accession protocol for Sweden

to Turkey's parliament as soon as possible and to ensure ratification.

Erdogan has been critical of Sweden for allowing supporters of the Kurdistan Workers' Party,

which Turkey considers a terrorist group to raise money and stage demonstrations in Sweden.

Stoltenberg's tweet said in part, quote, this is an historic step which makes all NATO

allies stronger and safer.

President Joe Biden said he welcomed Stoltenberg's announcement.
