Lawmakers are returning to Capitol Hill today

after a recess and top of mind for Democrats

is President Biden's recent debate performance and what it means for his campaign.

Congressional Democrats remain split on calls for President Biden to step aside from his

re-election bid.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has said he supports Biden, but some other Democrats

are forcefully calling for a change at the top of the ticket,

including the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee in the House, Congressman Adam Smith of

Washington.

Smith said Biden's debate performance was quote

alarming to watch and said that the president hasn't seriously addressed the

concerns of the American public.

Biden sent a letter to congressional Democrats saying he is staying in the race and that the discussions about
