At least 16 people are dead, dozens wounded after an Israeli

airstrike hit a UN school where displaced

people were sheltering in Gaza, it's according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

And Piers Kat Lonsdorf has more but first a warning this report contains some

disturbing details. The school is a new serrat in Central Gaza where many fled

after recent evacuation orders. NPR's producer in Gaza Anisa, went to the school shortly after the strike.

It was filled with families and children.

Twenty-year-old Nidal Kefernet is living at the school and witnessed the explosion.

He says he ran to try to help.

He described a scene of horrific carnage where kids had been playing.

He says he collected the parts of one child's body so the

child could be buried whole. The Israeli military says the school had been used by

Hamas as an operational facility and that quote numerous steps were taken in order to mitigate

the risk of harming civilians. This is at least the third Israeli
