Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is now warning the government will run short of money to

pay its bills unless Congress acts to raise the debt ceiling by June 5th.

And PR Scott Horsley reports on the new timeline the Secretary spelled out today.

In a letter to lawmakers, Yellen says the government will make scheduled payments to veterans

and social security recipients on June 1 and 2.

But doing so will leave the government with very little cash on hand.

Unless Congress acts quickly to allow additional borrowing by the government, there likely

won't be enough money to make payments to the following week, June 5th.

The new timeline is more precise than Yellen's earlier warnings, but also suggest lawmakers

have a few more days to reach agreement on a new borrowing limit.

The Treasury Secretary once again urged Congress to act quickly, noting the government's

short-term borrowing costs have already increased as a result of the debt ceiling printmanship.
