McCarthy and the White House are still in ongoing talks over raising the federal government's

debt limit. As NPR's Hemenibustio reports, the negotiators are still working toward a

compromise before the end of next week.

House members left Washington with hopes of getting to enjoy their long holiday weekend.

The founder of the far right group, the Oath Keepers, has been sentenced to 18 years in

prison for his role in the deadly January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. NPR's Dave

Mistich reports Stuart Rhodes was the first person to receive his punishment after being

convicted of federal charges of seditious conspiracy.

58-year-old Rhodes appeared in a Washington, DC courtroom in an Orden Shumpsuit and called

himself a political prisoner. The 18-year sentence is the longest handed down so far, related

to the Justice Department's prosecution of hundreds of pro-Trump rioters who held a violent

protest two years ago. Defense attorney Edward Tarpley Jr. says Rhodes was not the leader

of any sort.
