President Biden says he's still confident he will reach a deal with House Republicans

to avoid a default on the U.S. national debt.

That's despite a brief stop in the negotiations yesterday and increasingly charged rhetoric

about the tenor of the talks.

NPR Scott Detro reports from Hiroshima, where the president is attending G7 talks.

It's briefly broke down Friday before resuming, and House Republicans say they've made

clear to the White House that they want to see firm spending cuts.

A White House statement blasted the GOP stands, implying they're negotiating in bad

faith, but during a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Biden told

reporters he's not at all concerned about the state of talks.

This goes in stages.

Mr. President, these negotiations before.

Biden apologized to Albanese for canceling next week's trip to Australia in order to

get home faster to rejoin negotiations.

Albanese said he would have done the same thing.
