How Speaker Kevin McCarthy says he thinks the president and congressional leaders need

to reach a deal to avoid a government default by the weekend.

If he has needed to wash reports ahead of another White House meeting schedule for tomorrow.

Speaker McCarthy told reporters he's not seeing any movement in the talks between White

House aides and Hill staffers on a bill to increase the country's borrowing authority.

They're not going well at all. There's no progress that I see.

And it really concerns me with the timeline of where we are.

The Speaker warned there's just a handful of days to finalize legislation

and then get it through both the House and Senate before early June,

which is when the Treasury Department says the U.S. will run out of money to pay its bills.

But he also said he opposed any short-term bill to lift the debt ceiling.

President Biden was more upbeat over the weekend, saying he was optimistic

and there was a desire on both sides to reach an agreement.
