Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Corvus Coleman, President Biden and top congressional

leaders will meet this afternoon at the White House.

As NPR's Tamarik Heath reports, a week after their first meeting, there have been no major

breakthroughs and talks to avoid a federal government debt default.

Staff-level meetings happened Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

A source familiar with the talk said they have been productive, but there are still significant

disagreements about the path forward.

The source spoke with NPR on condition of anonymity to describe private negotiations,

saying there is common ground on clawing back some unused COVID relief funds and permitting

reform for energy and infrastructure projects.

That's likely not enough to get House Republicans to agree to raise the debt ceiling.

They want spending caps and tougher work requirements for Medicaid and food assistance.

There's little chance this will be resolved before President Biden departs tomorrow.

The G7 meeting in Japan, but he will continue to get regular updates.

The Treasury Secretary meanwhile is warning that the federal government will run out of

money to pay its bills as early as June 1st to avoid this, a congressional vote is needed

to raise the debt ceiling.

The federal government's watchdog agency has released a new study examining non-compete

agreements, these ban employees from working for competing companies or even starting one

of their own.
