Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Herbst. Thousands of migrants continue to cross

into the U.S. from Mexico, but Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Meorquez says border

crossings have dropped off since the pandemic era policy known as Title 42 expired.

Secretary Meorquez says the number of migrants crossing the border has dropped by half since

Thursday night when the pandemic era ruled expired that allowed the U.S. government to

turn away asylum seekers in the name of public health.

Over the past two days, the United States border patrol has experienced a 50% drop in the

number of encounters versus what we were experiencing earlier in the week before Title 42 ended

at midnight on Thursday.

Meorquez speaking on CNN state of the Union, a feared surge at the U.S. Mexico border has

not materialized, despite a rush to the border earlier last week when crossings top 10,000

per day.

New rules require migrants to use legal pathways or face a five-year ban on reentry, Trial
