Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Herbst. Several countries are working together

to get their people out of cartoon Sudan as heavy fighting persists for a ninth day.

US and British diplomatic personnel have been evacuated.

K. Bartlett has more.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, quote, UK armed forces have completed a complex

and rapid evacuation of British diplomats and their families.

Meanwhile, France has not commented on a claim by the paramilitary group involved in

the fighting, the rapid support forces, that the French convoy was fired at while heading

to the airport and a French citizen was injured, forcing them to turn back.

Belgium and the Netherlands are also primed for an evacuation and Japanese media said Tokyo

had reddit aircraft in neighboring Djibouti.

The Russian embassy said nearly all its citizens had been moved to the embassy ahead of a possible

evacuation.

There's been a rash of shootings in recent days seemingly resulting from mistaken identity

or an overreaction to everyday occurrences when people knock on the wrong door or pull

into the wrong driveway.

Alison Alderman with the Giffords Law Center, which advocates for stricter gun laws, says

part of the problem is the standard ground laws that tell gun owners it's okay to shoot

any time they perceive a threat.

There is a narrative in this country being pushed by gun, the gun industry and certain

legislators that a person needs to be armed in public at all times to be safe, that they
