The U.S. military has evacuated American government personnel from the capital of Sudan,

fighting between two rival military factions has raged there for more than a week.

MPR St. Amber Keith reports on President Biden's evacuation order.

President Biden said in a statement, he is grateful for the unmatched skill of service

members who successfully brought the U.S. Embassy staff to safety.

He thanked the nations of Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Saudi Arabia for their assistance, and

he expressed admiration for those embassy personnel who he said performed their duties

with courage and professionalism before being evacuated.

The U.S. is temporarily suspending operations at its embassy in Sudan.

And Biden said he is receiving updates on the ongoing efforts to help Americans still

in Sudan, quote, to the extent possible.

Biden described the violence between two military factions there as tragic and unconscionable,

and said it must stop.

Biden administration officials are pledging to continue efforts to help Americans in Sudan

following the U.S. military evacuation of the embassy in Khartoum.

Thousands of Americans are believed to be among the foreign nationals who remain.

it will also help some citizens of allied countries.
